The process of writing a joke...

In class today we covered how to write for humor. We broke down how a joke is formulated and watched several entertaining clips of different kinds of jokes that can be produced. A joke contains three main components which include the setup, a punch line, and a tag. The setup of a joke is basically the building blocks to your audience. An example of this could be a small story about whatever your joke is based on. After your setup comes the punch line, the punch line is the main portion of the joke where most of the humor lies. Lastly is the tag, this portion of the joke is not always needed but can be used very effectively at times. The action performed by the tag is to just basically add a little something to the punch line, a compliment. We also learned what was labeled as the six essential ingredients in the humor recipe which are target, hostility, realism, exaggeration, emotion, and surprise.
